Mark interests span a great deal of international development commitments, just some examples of which include:

Supporting the Ugandan Wetland Programme in the late 1980s, developing the SWAMP expert system to institute ecosystem services into national policy

Principal Investigator on the Earthwatch Programme, extending research into the catchment of Lake Naivasha, Kenya, building capacity amongst local scientists and supporting development of the Naivasha Ramsar site’s catchment management plan

Co-leading the ‘Watercourse’ capacity-building programme in South Africa, supporting national and state government and local stakeholder groups in the transformation of water resources management and sharing arrangements in the democratic era

Co-developing a ‘payment for ecosystem services’ scheme in the Himalayas around angling ecotourism, involving local people in a share of the profits to promote their self-beneficial engagement with conservation of the river ecosystem

Supporting the Indian State Government of Maharashtra in initiating a ‘ecosystem assessment’ programme
